Life's Journey- A Marathon, NOT A Sprint 🏅
A Column by Guest Writer, Ms. Punam Gupta - Mentor and Principal, BGSIPS, New Delhi.
“Learning and Leadership co-exists, only when there is constant Hardwork and Dedication towards the goal.”
Twenty Five years back when I stood at the courtyard of Blue Star Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh, India), my mind was muddled. It was my first job and harsh circumstances of my life had taken me there. But soon I realised my calling was Children. After a year and a half I got an opportunity to work in Alpine Residential Public School Bhawana as Teacher cum Warden. It was absolutely a different learning all together. Managing a boys’ hostel was not at all easy. I could bring the affairs on my stride only when I began building a connect with them. Soon in a year’s time, I was appointed as the Deputy Headmistress in the same institution. Staying in the campus helped me to understand children better .Strict routine of the campus, from Rouser to Lights off was a roller coaster ride. The school gave me the biggest learning that ONLY GOOD HUMANS CAN BE GOOD TEACHERS. I could build relations for life there. In year 2000, when I was entrusted with the responsibility of establishing BGSEC Mangalore. I asked myself - can I do it? I walked with conviction. It gave me a different experience and learning about life and I improved my Adaptability Quotient.
In the year 2003, I was told that I was entrusted with a big responsibility. It was to establish a new school, BGSIPS at New Delhi. I knew it required continuous planning and preparation and of course lots of patience. It also demanded a lot of time, dedication, right attitude and aptitude. Right attitude and aptitude always require a lot of discipline. While working on it, I never considered it only as only a job. I nurtured it like my own baby, putting my heart and soul to it. I took each day as a day and started developing it step by step. With RIGHT ATTITUDE came along RIGHT PEOPLE as well. Most of the people who joined were with HUMANISTIC ATTITUDE. I am sure That made the whole difference. All these people whom I call BGSIPS family became the transmitters of values. Their consistency became our strength. We came across our own share of ups and downs but one needs to show up for work with same kind of enthusiasm and energy. NO PROCRASTINATION was THE MANTRA. Days were kept productive and consistent. During this beautiful journey I came across beautiful human beings, management, teachers, students and parents. Yes, it has been a Marathon in which resilience has been the key, which kept us going. We have miles to go, and that requires constant up skilling.
“Vision is important, but it is more important to continuously work your way out towards that vision.”
According to me, In our lives the ultimate goal is not to exhaust all our might in one short-lived burst rather, to conserve it and keep on running as long as we can, overcoming obstacles and gaining experiences.
